Number of parameters ?

Hello everyone !

I'm a PHD student in France and I've been using BirdNET for the last year on cold temperate forest.
On the BirdNET source paper, it is outlined that the first version of the model is using 27 million parameters and I wonder what is the number of parameter now as the number of species BirdNET is able to detect as amazingly increased !

As anyone as the information ? I do not seem to find it ...

The current version has roughly 10 million parameters - considerably fewer than earlier versions, despite improved recognition capabilities.

Also, I came across a publication by Strubell et al., published in 2020 encouraging model's publisher as well as users to select model not only on performance, but also in energy consumption during training and maintenance. I was wondering if such data were available for BirdNET to include them in my selection process ?

Yes, we made a rough estimate some time ago, assuming that all our servers are running at 100% capacity (which is rarely the case). Processing one hour of audio generates 0.26 g of CO2 equivalent. Since most of the energy in Germany comes from renewables, this figure does not reflect the actual climate impact and values might fluctuate based on availability of renewable energy.
