Idiot-proof guide for plugin (icons specifically)

I've been going through the discussions, guide, and issues trying to solve this myself but am at a loss.
I cannot seem to figure out how to add additional icons for use - in particular I want varying icons to identify Parts Categories and likely locations.
I am installed on a Ubuntu VM using the latest installer script from 'https://docs.inventree.org/en/latest/start/installer/'.
I have ensured that 'INVENTREE_PLUGINS_ENABLED=True' and can access/control the default plugins.

Can anyone write out how to accomplish in simple English for me?

to add custom icons you will need to develop a plugin, that is not "idiot-proof" as you put it

You can only do it via plug-in? Would it be a feature request to have a local directory to deposit desired icons? I only ask as other applications I have used had this capability.

Yes, you can only do it vie plugins. No, I do not think it is worth it to provide another way to specify icon sets.
