index.html shows on subdomain on ctrl+shift+r

Upon loading a subdomain url, e.g. https://bafybeibgua76y24qarr6gpagfr67qzsyutpo2otybsqqgnsk4xe4ur5wmy.ipfs.inbrowser.link/ I got the root config page

I'm not 100% certain why, but upon discussion with @SgtPooki, it seems that this might be related to the "time bomb"

Somewhat related question: Why is any IPFS related UI loaded at all when loading subdomains? I would expect the behavior to be the same as other mirros, e.g. eth.limo, i.e. just load the actual page content directly and don't display any generic loading UI.

That's a bug, which we discussed in the Helia WG yesterday, which we suspect is related to #809.

You should never see UI when loading a subdomain origin. The only thing we do is a bounce to the base origin to pass the service worker config to the subdomain, which is why you might see a flash when first loading a subdomain.

I meant the config UI. The pulsating IPFS logo was there to provide some user feedback while the SW registration is happening.

@oed I get that, but you're loading their page through the service worker gateway, right? If you go through a tunnel, can that tunnel not have any markings of its own?

Also, UX patterns require some indicator of loading, or folks will be reluctant to stay and wait. Do you have a recommendation for a better loading indicator for an IPFS gateway?

@SgtPooki I guess I'm comparing to eth.limo which doesn't have any markings and loads the page pretty much instantly. I guess that might not be possible in the same way with the service worker gateway though.

• Can be reproduced by going to a subdomain and then reloading with ctrl+shift+r
  • index.html is displayed, SW does not engage
  • ctl+shift+r is a hard reload that skips SW, likely we are missing some extra check that detects that index.html was loaded on a subdomain, and either reload inplace, or if it does not work, redirects to main page to reload config and back to subdomain for SW to kick-in again
