Getting chrome.tabs.create callback to work in v3?

Hi I was just wondering if anyone had any luck getting chrome.tabs.create's callback to fire in v3?

I've tried something like so:

chrome.runtime.onMessage.addListener(async function (  
request,  
sender,  
sendResponse  
) {  
	console.log(request.currentTab);

	if (  
	request !== null &&  
	request !== undefined &&  
	request.tokens !== null &&  
	request.tokens !== undefined  
	) {  
		console.log(request.tokens);

		    await chrome.tabs.create(
                    {
                      active: false,
                      openerTabId: request.currentTab,
                      url: 'http://localhost:4200/',
                    }).then((t) => {
                      alert('moo');
                    });
	}
});

But either trying to supply a callback function or using promises fails to alert

Late to the party but it might help someone else.
When using async/await with onMessage listener you need to return true at the end of the listeners callback's body.

chrome.runtime.onMessage.addListener((message, sender, sendResponse) => {
    // do not use async/await within listener callback

    /*no await!!!*/ some_checking_function_01(message, sender, sendResponse)
    /*no await!!!*/ some_checking_function_02(message, sender, sendResponse) 

    return true     // return true is essential to indicate that response will be sent asynchronously
})

And remember to use the sendResponse inside the listener's callback's body. In my case both some_checking_functions should use sendResponse and send anything.
