Cannot use an E-Mail address with an underscore, "Email Address has invalid characters", despite being in-spec for E-Mail/DNS

Underscores are commonplace and in-spec for E-Mail addresses (namely the username component): https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Email_address

We're running PWM and it is refusing to accept underscores in the username, despite literally every E-Mail system on the planet allowing them. The error message provided is "Email Address has invalid characters", and so far I cannot find a way to allow underscores.

So this is a bug, and if we could please have this fixed at some point soon, that would be great. We use this tool for secure new user account creation so over time more and more people will just not sign up for our services until this is fixed, again because underscores are commonplace.

So instead of closing the topic, like #483, can we please have this fixed in the hopefully near future? Thanks! :)

Okay so update, I still think the default PWM configuration should be adjusted, because the underscore is in-scope. However I have found a solution for $futureHumans.

When configuring the New User Form and modifying the "Options" for the "email" type, one needs to adjust the "Regular Expression"

The original value I had was:

^[a-zA-Z0-9 .,'@]*$

The new value is:

^[a-zA-Z0-9_ .,'@]*$

And now underscores are accepted! Don't forget to save and apply config change!

I'm leaving this comment open as IMO this change should be the default value for the setting.
