What happens if read() never resolves data?

I'm reading the documentation for BindingPort.read() and I feel like I'm missing something fundamental. What happens if the port is valid and open but the other side never sends data? The read call never resolves? I don't see any way to specify a timeout, and unlike node's FileHandle.createReadStream() I don't see any way to pass an AbortSignal either.

So how can I use async read() with the ability to give up after some time?

why this is useful, for comparsion this is what's required to do a read with timeout using the classic stream/callback API:
