Adding ONIX to MARC21 column to Accessibility Properties Crosswalk

Hello everyone,

My name is Morris Levy and I’m a Consulting Database Specialist on the Metadata Engagement team at OCLC. I’m new to GitHub and excited to collaborate with you on accessibility metadata initiatives.

At OCLC, we’ve been working closely with publishing partners to develop a method for incorporating ONIX data into MARC21 fields. We’re now ready to engage with the W3C community to discuss best practices for an ONIX-to-MARC crosswalk, particularly in the context of the Accessibility Properties Crosswalk.

As I’m still getting familiar with how discussions typically unfold here, I’d appreciate any guidance on how best to get started.

Hello Charles, Thank you for letting me know about the presentation. I've registered for the OCUL Accessibility Symposium 2.0 and am looking forward to attending your session with Madeleine and Chris. Would it be possible to consider my earlier request to add an ONIX to MARC21 column to the Accessibility Properties Crosswalk as a new discussion topic? We've been working with publishers to record ONIX headings in field 341 and the response so far has been overwhelmingly positive. Thanks for considering this suggestion. Actually Morris, we already started work on that column.
If you go and download the code from Github at https://github.com/w3c/a11y-discov-vocab and edit the index.html file you will see that we are hiding that column with CSS along with another column as they weren't yet ready and made this table very difficult to read.

The two columns hidden are:

ONIX to MARC21 using EPUB Vocabulary
&
ONIX to MARC21 using ONIX Codes*
*Awaiting clarification on recording ONIX codes in MARC21

The ONIX toMARC21 is somewhat complete and the other is just a hold since all of those columns are empty.
This is something that can be worked on and we can have a demo option perhaps to display / hide those columns as we work to finalizing them in the future.

Hi Charles, Thank you for sharing the index.html file with me. I've reviewed the content, and it looks like the ONIX to MARC21 using EPUB Vocabulary and ONIX to MARC21 using ONIX Codes columns are mostly empty, aside from a few entries in the former that read "532 8# Accessibility Note$a." In contrast, the EPUB to MARC21 and Schema.org in MARC21 columns appear to be much more complete. Do you think we could begin working on the ONIX to MARC21 using ONIX Codes column now, while you're in the process of publishing the latest version of the crosswalk? With ONIX now officially approved by the Library of Congress Network Development and MARC Standards Office as an accessibility content source, we have the opportunity to use the ONIX headings-rather than the codes themselves-in field 341. This might be a good time to move forward with that work. Hi Morris, absolutely, since these columns are being hidden thats fine, please feel free to make a Pull request with changes to either of the two hidden columns adding content you feel should be added and we will review them with our ONIX and MARC editors for this document.
