If you're new to the Netherlands, shopping for basic household items can be a challenge when you can't recognize store names. This page is dedicated to helping you find what you need.
Dutch equivalents to American big brand stores:
| Dutch Brand | American Brand | Description |

| Hema, Blokker | Target | Mid-quality household items, stationary, clothing, snacks, etc. |
| Dirk and Bas | Grocery Outlet | Cheap foods |
| Xenos, Zeeman | Dollar-store quality stuff. | Good for cheap party supplies and some basic household items. |
| Bijenkorf | Nordstrom | Department store. |
| V&D | Macy's | Department store. |
| C&A | Kohl's | Department store. |
| Kruidvat, Etos | Rite-Aid | Drugstore, health & beauty stuff. |
| Albert Heijn | Safeway, Ralph's | Grocery store. |
| Marks & Spencer (on Kalverstraat) | Trader Joe's | Grocery store (doesn't have as much produce as Trader Joe's). |
| Marqt, Biomarkt, Ekoplaza | Whole Foods | Organic ("biologisch" in Dutch) grocery stores. |
| Gamma, Praxis | Home Depot | Home improvement and garden supplies. |
| Douglas | Sephora | Make-up, perfumes, beauty supplies. |
| Saturn, MediaMarkt | Best Buy | Home electronics and appliances. |
| Dobey | PetSmart | Pet supplies. |
