This rule detects attempts to exploit CVE-2025-52970, an authentication bypass in Fortinet FortiWeb, by looking for crafted requests to the sensitive endpoint /api/fabric/device/status with a suspicious Authorization header. The attack leverages SQL injection-like payloads in the Authorization header, typically starting with a single quote and semicolon (';). The rule:

  • Matches requests to the /api/fabric/device/status endpoint (case-insensitive).
  • Checks if the authorization header contains the substring ';, which is a strong indicator of the exploit attempt as seen in the provided nuclei template payloads.
  • Uses lowercase transformation to ensure case-insensitive matching.
  • The rule avoids false positives by only triggering when both the endpoint and the crafted header are present.
  • The test nuclei template is adapted to send a representative exploit payload and expects a 403 response, indicating the WAF blocks the attack.

Validation Checklist:

  • All value: fields are lowercase.
  • transform includes lowercase where applicable.
  • No match.value contains capital letters.
  • Rule uses contains instead of regex where applicable.
