plain file with the deployed git commit hash.

Usecase:

  • Can be read on app boot / put into env variable,
  • for error tracking, logging etc. to reference the relevant git commit that caused an exception
  • show version of installed software to user somewhere in ui

Other ideas for a name for that kind of file? Any best practice/standard name?

Good addition.

This requires a bit of documentation. I'm also not sure if we should enable this by default.

I will ask some colleagues about the filename.
