In the context of #1243 this PR improves the smear memory protection for the pidhashtable plugin.

I should've checked, this didn't require #1243 being merged first, did it? I'm still not keen on overriding bool... 5:S

It doesn't require #1243 .. it's just a reference to understand the context of these changes
